5.3.2012 May 2012 : Page 50 ![]() ![]() 1.26.2012 "Also keepin’ it real down in SoHum, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real (you know, that rock band led by Willie’s super talented son), who return to the Mateel next Wednesday, Feb. 1, with Aloha Radio, a SoCal surf rock band fronted by Lauren Mulderrig, a blonde surfer who looks like she stepped off the cover of a Beach Boys album (and she can sing too)." Bob Doran, The Northcoast Journal 8.29.2011 ![]() Aloha Radio is a rather new band from Southern California that has quite a unique sound. They provide their audiences with the ultimate surf rock experience. I instantly loved the band after listening to their song My Hand My Heart. They’re also involved in some pretty impressive events lately, such as the Doheny Days Music Festival on September 10th alongside Neon Trees, Weezer, Ziggy Marley, Cake and Ben Harper. The band consists of four members, Lauren Mulderrig on lead vocals, ukulele, and acoustic guitar, Alex Barnett on electric guitar, lap steel and backing vocals, Captin on bass, and Chris Hori on drums and percussion. I asked Lauren a little more about Aloha Radio, what the band’s plans are for the rest of the year, and what advice she would give to bands that are just starting out. This is what she had to say... I think the event was a success,” said recreation coordinator Scott Stewart. “We do free concerts once a month. This is just the first time we’ve given the opportunity to skate.” While local bands played a variety of genres, skaters flew around from all angles of the park, giving the concert a kamikaze-like atmosphere. Kick flips, wheelies and huge arching turns seemed to flow to the rhythm of each band’s sound. The bands included Mission Viejo surf rockers Aloha Radio. “Originally, I was in a folk-rock band, then I picked up a ukulele and wrote ‘Deep Blue Ocean,’” said lead vocalist Lauren Mulderrig. “I’ve always been heavily involved with music and I like this direction better than folk rock.” Read the full article at Lake Forest Patch 3.3.2011 "Local prodigy Lauren Mulderrig teamed up with Alex Barnett,Chris Hori and Captin to create Aloha Radio. Fresh out of the studio from recording EP Big Wave Madness, Lauren sat down with ocmusicscene to talk about surf music and subcompact touring. Q: Surf music was first popularized back in the early sixties. Is this genre finding a new audience today? A: I definitely think so. I have always been inspired by the sixties and I see a lot of surf punk/ lo-fi bands on the rise. Surf is one of those genres that shouldn't have been forgotten about but it has been. I think the instrumental music is amazing but it wouldn't be found on mainstream radio today. That's kinda my little mission with AR, bring surf back to the masses..." For those of us who wring our hands over the lack of ukulele and steel guitar in popular music, Aloha Radio is the antidote..." Next Monday, January 17th Costa Mesa United will be holding their 6th Annual Mesa Verde Classic Golf Tournament. This will be the largest fundraiser of the year for Costa Mesa United, a local Costa Mesa charity which supports youth sports in the city, and has already SOLD OUT. The theme of the event is that "every hole is an event" and surf's up on the green. Surfing on the course...not exactly. There will be a surf themed hole on the course featuring local OC Surf Rock band, ALOHA RADIO. Aloha Radio is a culmination of all things surf with a mix of songs that any person of any age will enjoy. From high energy Dick Dale inspired tracks featuring the pounding drums and fast picking that made surf rock so popular to catchy Hawaiian style songs that feature lap steel and ukulele, Aloha Radio's music offers their audience a new and exciting surf experience. Lauren Mulderrig, lead singer of Aloha Radio, said "We are really excited and stoked to be apart of the Mesa Verde Classic. I am glad that Aloha Radio can be involved donating our time and talents for a wonderful cause, youth sports! Our music is based on the sport of surfing, so naturally I love to support local sports programs". Other hole themes include a skate theme, an exotic theme, a martini bar and much more! You can learn more about The Mesa Verde Classic HERE 11.17.2010 Lauren wrote a special article for Resin Music about the origins of surf music, creating the hit 'Deep Blue Ocean' and gave her tips for fellow female musicians. "Aloha! My name is Lauren and I am really excited to be writing a post for Resin Music's Surf Roots Girl. I am currently the singer/songwriter for Aloha Radio. We are a Surf Pop band from Orange County, CA. My band members and I got together a year ago to start working on this new music venture. We set out to be a Surf band which confuses some people when they don't hear an acoustic guitar and Jack Johnson or Jason Mraz.To clarify, Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture, pioneered by acts such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones..."
